Photovoltaic PV Solar Panel Installers

PV Solar Panel Installers

Hallmark Power’s Solar PV systems can be a very good alternative to a wind turbine if your property or farm does not have a suitable wind speed or you are in a difficult place to get permission for a turbine. Solar PV is extremely reliable & almost maintenance free. PV systems can be a better option for some farm business’ such as poultry or pig units as the energy from the solar modules is a more constant supply which matches the steady consumption of the environmental and feeding systems used by these.

Roof and Ground mounted Solar Panel Installers

Hallmark’s team of solar panel installers have installed a large number of roof and field or “ground” mounted systems from 10kW upwards.  Occasionally agricultural buildings have little spare capacity in the roof loading – in these instances we suggest ground mounted systems. Less expensive to supply and install, they are also easier to orientate & angle for optimum performance. Ground mounted Solar PV systems can also be mounted high enough off the ground to allow small livestock to graze around and under them without causing harm.

Solar PV Options and Useful Information

Please take a look at the table below to find out more about this product and click on the tabs on the left to view the additional pages. If you have any questions feel free to contact us

Solar PV Panels

Photovoltaic (PV) cells use sunlight to generate electricity. The modules Hallmark Power use are LG, Schott, REC and Suntech – poly and mono construction combined with SMA or Fronius inverters. These are high quality panels which are very efficient & have a very low rate of degradation over their lifetime. Installation schedule is 3 months approx.

Note: There are many companies around which appear to offer ‘very attractive’ prices but please be aware that these systems will probably be utilizing low grade modules that will produce much less energy than a higher grade module & also be prone to failure during the period of the Feed In Tariff.

Solar FIT Rate (Current & Proposed)

FIT payments are payable for energy you export to the grid. They will be paid to you by whichever energy company you have made a contractual agreement with.

district network operator map Connecting to the Grid

In order to connect any renewable energy installations to the National Grid, prior permission is required from the District Network Operator (DNO) – the owner of the local energy grid infrastructure.

The full list of DNO’s & contact information can be seen here

Hallmark Power can assist you with this application as part of your project to ensure that it is suitable for your tailored solution.

DNO - Your Responsibilities and the Application Process Explained...

It is your responsibility to ensure your District Network Operator connection has been completed prior to the agreed installation date.

You must have either:-

  1. An agreement with the DNO that no upgrade costs are required, or have
  2. Completed DNO upgrade works by the agreed installation date in accordance with the DNO and Hallmark Power Ltd.’s standards.

Energy export Meter

Because of the size of your installation, you must make an agreement with an energy company to purchase your exported energy at a fixed cost. This may be your existing supplier or you may elect to choose someone else who may be able to offer a higher price. They will make you an offer to purchase your energy on a per kW/h scale. You will then enter into a contract with them.

To export your energy, the amount has to be measured. The company that you forge an alliance with regarding your electricity will make recommendations as to who can install a meter for this purpose. You will also need to enter into an agreement with them, and there will be an installation and maintenance cost associated with this. Incidentally, this meter will need to be fitted on the final day of the DNO grid upgrade work to complete the job, so there is some coordination required there. You may have a new MPAN number created by the DNO for this purpose and they will be able to give you this information which is necessary to fill out the forms to generate the contracts for the energy export and for the meter.

In general, it takes approximately two months to organise the contracts with the energy companies and arrange for the meter to be fitted, so please allow a minimum of this amount of time to carry this out, and co-ordinate with the DNO.

It is not possible for Hallmark Power Ltd to install and commission your installation without the DNO work completed and the export meter in place.

If your work is not completed before your installation date which will be part of the agreed schedule with the installation team, we reserve the right to adjust the cost for the remainder of the work in line with current market prices for additional costs that we incur.

Hallmark Power Ltd can offer full administrative assistance for completion of the paperwork for you to read through, authorise and sign for £1,500 plus VAT. It is not possible however, for Hallmark Power Ltd to make these agreements for you because they are contractual agreements between you and another company.

Communication is always key to a successful project, so please feel free to ask any questions that you may have, and also communicate all updates and schedules for the DNO upgrade work and export meter to Hallmark Power Ltd so that we can coordinate work around it.

If you have any queries, or require any additional information at all, then please do not hesitate to contact us…

Claiming Your Feed-In Tariff and Selling Your Energy

The “Feed-In Tariff” (FIT) is an incentive introduced for renewable energy installations – a Government scheme launched in April 2010. FIT payments will be paid to you by whichever energy company you have made a contractual agreement with. FIT is paid per unit (kilowatt hours or kWh) and the amount per unit received is dependent on size & type of your installation/s…

How To Claim Your FIT

If your installation is less than 50kw, to claim you FIT it is necessary to complete a Feed-in Tariff application form with your energy provider and provide them with a copy of your MCS certificate for your installation. The energy provider will then send you a contract to sign and you will then enter into an arrangement whereby you provide them with meter readings and they pay you (usually) quarterly for FIT payment.

If your installation is 50kw or bigger, to be able to claim your FIT, you will need to register yourself with Ofgem as a generating company. To do this you go to the renewables section of the Ofgem site here and fill in the appropriate information.

This doesn’t need to be completed until the installation is finished, but you can start your application 2 months in advance of this. Please don’t submit it until your installation is completed, because you will need the commissioning documents to complete the form.

Until this accreditation number has been generated with Ofgem, you will be unable to claim the Feed-in Tariff.

About: Energy Export Meters

If your installation is smaller than 35kw, then it is assumed by your supplier that you use 50% of everything that is generated and sell 50%. You can make an arrangement with your current supplier or another energy provider, to purchase this energy.

If the installation is greater than 35kw, because of the size of your installation, you must make an agreement with an energy company to purchase your exported energy at a fixed cost.

Anaerobic Digesters

What Is Anaerobic Digestion ?

Anaerobic Digestion (AD) is the process where plant & animal material (biomass) is converted into useful products by micro-organisms in the absence of air. Biomass is put in sealed tanks and micro-organisms digest it releasing methane (biogas) that can be used to provide clean renewable energy. The digestate product from Anaerobic Digesters has increased nutrient availability, providing operators with a better performing product that can reduce fertilizer bills.

The “Renewable Heat Incentive” (RHI), similar to the FIT, pays producers of renewable heat a set fee per unit (kilowatt hours or kWh). The scheme was only introduced in 2011 and currently only provides support to small scale AD plants < 200 kW, however this is under consultation. If the business has the ability to utilise heat onsite then a smaller scale AD project can become more viable.

Hallmark Power will register your CHP (Combined Heat & Power) engine with the DECC (Department for Environment & Climate Change) to qualify to receive FIT and RHI, as well as LEC’s (Levy Exemption Certificates) which are automatically charged to energy bills.

Hallmark offer wind turbine planning services and can also provide planning assistance for other renewable energy installations too.

At Hallmark Power we pride ourselves on steering our customers through what can be a difficult process. We have our very own team of highly successful RTPI accredited, in-house planning experts who hold a wealth of qualifications and experience in renewable planning. They are able to oversee all projects and will offer advice and support you every step of the way.

All of this ensures that we are able to combine a high degree of product and industry knowledge along with planning and environmental expertise to all of our customers; from small scale PV sites to large scale Wind Turbine planning and Anaerobic Digester plants.

Hallmark Power’s expert team can deliver a full planning service which includes:

  • An in-depth desktop study to investigate the suitability of potential installation sites and discuss the best technology solution for this site.
  • A full site  feasibility study which will cover:
    • A site visit by one of our team to assess environmental factors in the surrounding area (that may mean the site would not be suitable)
    • A budget District Network Operator (DNO) Application
    • Identification of possible issues with a potential planning application and how to overcome them, or advise not to proceed with the application
    • Estimated time schedule and cost of gaining planning approval.
  • Completion of all the necessary documents and applications to support the project.  A standard application would include a Design and Access Statement, a Noise Assessment, a Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment and MOD and Aviation reports. In some cases Bat Surveys and Ecological Reports may also be necessary.
  • Comprehensive Photo Montages using specialist software to support the visual and environment Impact Assessments should any potential objections arise. This allows planners and local authorities to gain a realistic view of how the finished project will look once installation is complete.
  • Ongoing management of the project and maintaining communication between local authorities and attendance at community consultations (if required).
The key factors that planning applications must address are:

  • Benefits to environment and greenhouse gas emissions
  • The safety of the installation
  • Visual Impact
  • Potential environment intrusion e.g. Noise from a turbine

There are areas that could potentially result in your planning application not being possible which may include:

  • Aviation issues (proximity of airports or Ministry of Defence)
  • Ecological issues (bats, rare birds, Newts etc)
  • Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Green Belt or National Park
  • Telecoms
